Description

In 1672 Holland, Cornelius van Baerle, a quiet tulip grower, wants to cultivate the black tulip to win a prize. His life changes when his godfather, Johan de Witt, is killed in political unrest. Cornelius is falsely accused of treason by his rival, Isaac Boxtel, who also wants the black tulip prize. Sent to Loevestein Castle, Cornelius finds hope in Rosa, the daughter of his jailer, Gryphus. Together, Cornelius and Rosa secretly work to grow the black tulip in prison. Rosa helps protect the tulip bulbs, even smuggling them out when Cornelius is transferred. Boxtel continues to plot against them, trying to steal the bulbs and discredit Cornelius. As they work together and face dangers, Cornelius and Rosa fall in love. Rosa’s courage leads her to Haarlem, where she shows the black tulip, exposing Boxtel and proving Cornelius’s innocence. Justice happens, Boxtel is punished, and Cornelius is freed, allowing him and Rosa to be together and enjoy their success. (Bookbrief)
