“In the field of machine tools, great confusion exists as regards terminology. Many frequently used and apparently equivalent terms are differently defined in the various languages, and in some languages words are not spelled consistently. In view of this situation, it was not possible for the editors to limit themselves to a straightforward inventory of these terms. In the interests of clarity they felt themselves obliged to supply for most terms a definition in English and, in the case of a number of standard tools, to go further and show their geometrical form by means of an illustration. In this way, the dictionary has almost unintentionally taken on an encyclopedic chracter.”
