Description

French and English Dictionary of Mathematical Vocabulary

This dictionary is intended for the use of French and of English speaking mathematicians who must consult material written in each other’s language.
The terminology which comprises the body of the work has been drawn primarily from the areas of algebra, analysis, geometry, differential equations. number theory, and topology. Logic, probability, statisties, game theory, and applied mathematics have been superficially treated. The subject matter runs from the most elementary levels to the first several years of graduate study.
Because of this complexity, we felt it would be misleading, if not impossible, to give mere word equivalents. Hence, every attempt was made to place ambiguous terms in context, and in some cases to provide complete definitions, so that correct translations will be found.
The spelling and pronunciation given for all English terms is that of standard American. While there are very few entries which exhibit a difference in spelling (for example, center – centre or rigorous – rigourous), the difference in pronunciation between British and American English remains considerable.
However, British dictionaries may be consulted for British pronunciations.
