Description

In a rich corner of Herefordshire in September, hop pickers gather for their month of hectic labour throughout the golden harvest season. Most of these colourful characters come from the Midlands, and some are girls from Wales. With them are the pilfering, swaggering, romantic gipsies, with their sharp tribal feuds. They go to two farms: the Manor, owned by John Sollars, whose well-kept lands and white fences tell of his prosperity; and the Hope, owned by the feckless, happy-go-lucky Tommy Tomkins, whose farm is mortgaged up to the hilt.

In the midst of all this activity, with gipsy fighting, labour disputes, attempts at arson and the seething life of this packed, mixed community, is the tender love story of young Tom Sollars and pretty Marianne Tomkins. September Moon is an unusual book, vivid and exciting in turn, that brings the breath of the countryside right home to the reader.
