Description
The first edition of the The Oxford Book of Italian Verse appeared in 1910. It included 345 poems by some hundred authors, from St. Francis to Carducci. In this second edition, an attempt has been made to provide a wider and better balanced choice of significant poems, while retaining as large a proportion of the original book as was as possible. Consequently some ninety poems have been substituted for eighty-two, mostly popular and patriotic songs, of the first edition. A further addition of twenty-six poems at the end of the book is designed to give an idea of how Italian Poetry developed from Carducci’s time up to the First World War. Text and notes have been revised according to the best available sources.
